Report focuses on barriers to jobs
A survey of job seekers in the region found that more than 80% face at least 3 barriers to employment. The Baltimore-based Opportunity Collaborative commissioned the report, which included a survey of 1,036 job seekers in a region that includes Anne Arundel County. In it, 82% mentioned barriers that included: 1) inadequate skills, 2) a criminal record, or 3) a lack of funds to pay for transportation or work clothes. Also, 62% said they were unable to find a job that offers a living wage.
The findings were released on Monday, June 2, 2014 at the National Electronics Museum in Linthicum. The study called for changes in the region's approach to workforce development by improving public transportation between low-income neighborhoods and high-growth job centers, increasing availability of adult education and GED courses.
In the fall, Opportunity Collaborative will release a list of strategies and action steps that can be undertaken, director Michael Kelly said. --The Capital, 6/3/14
